Well Jeff, you were right. I don’t like it. :)
It’s true that i’m not unbiased, but i can’t say i find the whole “the government has a lot of problems, so how much worse can this plan be” argument really that convincing. I also don’t see how this plan deals with most of the major problems we’re dealing with now, other than the high costs, i suppose. In fact it might make some things worse. No more FDA? So in addition to all the other things doctors have to do, you want to have them research every drug they give to their clients to make sure that Pfizer isn’t lying on it’s press release? Maybe the AMA could pick up some of the slack, but since they’re the new accrediting body for all doctors, they might be a little busy with that.
With no regulations in place, what’s keeping an insurance company from dumping cancer patients when they become to expensive to cover? Sure, they could sue, but do you really think somebody who’s battling cancer has the time, money or energy to fight with a giant insurance company? And on the biggest issue, health coverage for the poor and the elderly, relying on the kindness of strangers isn’t much a plan. Plus, you yourself should know that nothing is ever free. I have a feeling that any coverage provided in such a manner would raise costs just as much as all those people who overindulge in health care supposedly do.
I guess i’m glad that you’re not running for president.
